In New Mexico, July falls in the middle of our monsoon season, where heavy rains bless the desert and the mountains around us. In July 2021, a rainstorm guided a 14-month-old horse from the San Felipe Pueblo, near Algodones, NM, to Masleña Rescue. It was only fitting that we give her a special name in honor of her grand arrival. Maybe something southern? Maybe a double name? . . . July Rain.
July Rain needed a buddy, and Diesel (Tori’s first horse) sensed that. He stood day after day next to July Rain’s corral. After two weeks, she was able to be incorporated into the larger herd. With a friend like Diesel, and a name as strong as July Rain, she was finally ready to be a happy horse!
July Rain is definitely an “in your pocket” kind of horse. We are in the process of teaching her manners and personal space.  One of our wonderful volunteers, Pat, spends her Saturdays helping July Rain to reach her full potential. With the help of those around her she is beginning to figure out who she is. She is a sweet horse and is willing to learn. We expect nothing but great things from this little mare.
