Cheyanne was born on the ranch in 2009. She and her mom Nally are both Black Baldy crosses. Black Baldy is a type of crossbred cattle produced by crossing Hereford cattle with a solid black breed.
In February of 2011 the temperature plummeted to a record-breaking low of 30 degrees below zero. Cheyanne’s ears succumbed to extreme frostbite and froze off. Many of Jeff’s friends lost their horses and cattle due to the death-freeze that year. Jeff fed the livestock every hour to keep all the animals eating and warmed them internally by increasing body heat and circulation through digestion. Cheyanne and her pasture mates survived a brutal winter that year and lived to tell about it.
